Guardamar
has been populated since the prehistory. There are a
lot of deposits in the Bajo Segura area that give evidence
of all this ancient population since the Neolithic. We
have evidence of this most of all in our town,in the
low part of the mountain close to the river between
Rojales and Guardamar.
From this period we shall mention the Protoiberian Age
( centuries VIII – VI B.C.) in which people were
influenced by the Phoenicians that transformed the native
life of the area.Greek and Phoenician objects and manufactures
were introduced through the commerce.
In fact ,there was in Guardamar a Phoenician harbour
town.Nowadays you can find it in a place called “
La Fonteta” dated from the centuries VIII and
VI B.C.
It was a fortified town with a huge wall. Thanks to its
geographical situation it had a relationship with the
Phoenician shipping routes, through Ibiza and with the
other Phoenician points of the Mediterranean.
This ssetlement was very important as precedent for
the later magnificence of the Iberian culture in our
territory. |
