Guardamar del Segura is set in the south of the Costa Blanca, some 30 km from Alicante’s International Airport. It is a ‘Royal Town’ where the magic of the Mediterranean merges with the beauty of the dunes and the forests of palm and pine trees. Its strategic position on the coastal Mediterranean strip, its proximity to the mouth of the Segura river and the natural resources available within its local surroundings, have fostered an almost uninterrupted settlement of different cultures dating from prehistory until the present day.

Guardamar was founded in the 13th Century A.D. with the first Catalan colonial settlers brought there by King Jaume I, who handed over the now peaceful lands to his son in law, Alfonso X (the Wise), who had quelled one of the many Islamic uprisings. When Jaume II arrived, some decades later, Guardamar was incorporated into the Kingdom of Valencia under the rule of the Crown of Catalonia and Aragon. The town was attacked several times during the 14th Century and between 1502 and 1543, it also suffered several Berber pirate invasions. The town of Guardamar that we know today was reconstructed after the fatal earthquakes of 1829 – thanks to the work of the engineer, Larramendi.

The tourism sector is of vital importance to our town - and its infrastructure and resources make it the envy of many bigger towns and cities. Our web site provides more information on what we have to offer – our tourist accommodation, our cultural and sports facilities, our festivities and leisure activities.
