This forest place
is 800 hectares wide and in the beginning it was a set
of mobile sand dunes which were fixed by different plantations
such as pine trees, palm trees, eucalyptus and so on...It
was a project that was started in 1900 by Francisco
Mira y Botella who was a Mountain Engineer. |
| |
|
| |
The original Guardamar
and Elche´s dunes were formed by the sand that
was thrown on the beach by the sea waves. Then the wind
took the sand into the village forming big mountains
of sand.At the en of the 19th Century the village was
threatened to be buried.A reafforestation took place
to fix the sand dunes in order to avoid the coming of
the sand. |
The reafforestation
began in 1900 and finished in the 30s.It is the present
sand mass next to the sea and it is also kept in different
old forest buildings of that time. |
|
| |
| As this area is very fragile for its
characteristics it needs a non-stop care of the forest
services and also from the love and respect of the visitors. The
closest dune to the sea is really delicated,so you must
keep off the sand. |
